Painted in 1912 in the Cubist expressionist style by Franz Marc, The Tiger, with its jagged shards of color help accentuate the stripes while also seamlessly incorporating the cat into its colorful environment. The head is, as Marc’s monkey of the same year, turned back – this time as if about to see us. This creates a link with the animal but also perhaps problematizes the viewer’s intrusion.
Franz Marc: The Tiger is in the Staedt Galerie in Lenbachhaus, Germany.
