The Royal End Paul Gauguin

The Royal End: Paul Gauguin

The Royal End is an 1892 painting in the Post-Impressionist style by the leading French artist Paul Gauguin. This work is located in the Getty Center in Los Angeles, California.

This painting, also titled ‘Arii Matamoe’, depicts a decapitated head placed on a white cloth or pillow. We can see written above is the phrase “Arii Matamoe” which means noble sleeping eyes – which could represent that a noble death has taken place. It is not known who this – likely guillotined, head belonged to, or if it was based on real-life events or not.
