Saint Francis Kneeling in Meditation: El Greco

Saint Francis Kneeling in Meditation was painted by El Greco, who was renowned as a prolific painter of this saint who was seen here in a state of utter submission to the crucifix. On a diagonal axis from the skull on the rock (a reminder of death) via Francis’s head upward to the green foliage, we are reminded of the Christian life to come after death. El Greco’s real name was Domenico Theotokopoulos, and he painted this work sometime between 1605 and 1610.

El Greco’s Saint Francis Kneeling in Meditation is in the Meadows Museum in Dallas, Texas.
