Promenade at Sunset, Paris: Childe Hassam

Childe Hassam: Promenade at Sunset, Paris

Frederick Childe Hassam was part of an American cohort of artists working in France in the latter 19th century where he painted Promenade at Sunset, Paris in 1889. This work is done quite impressionistically but such things as facial features and certain details like the street lamps are clearly discernible.

The shimmering watery effects of his application of paint to the canvas also relate to the fleeting and ephemeral experience of modern urban life at the time.
