Portrait of the Art Dealer Alexander Reid: Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh: Portrait of the Art Dealer Alexander Reid

This is a portrait of the Art Dealer Alexander Reid, who was a friend of both Vincent van Gogh and of James McNeil Whistler, who was was one of the most influential art dealers in Europe at the turn of the 20th century. In 1887 van Gogh painted his friend as part of a rhapsody of fiery colour – everything in the picture seems to either harmonise or rhyme with the colours of Reid’s red hair and beige suit.

Vincent van Gogh: Portrait of the Art Dealer Alexander Reid is in the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow.
