Portrait of the Art Dealer Alexander Reid Analysis

Alexander Reid was an art dealer and personal friend of both Vincent van Gogh and of James McNeil Whistler, was one of the most influential art dealers in Europe at the turn of the 20th century.

In 1887 van Gogh painted his friend as part of a rhapsody of fiery color – everything in the picture seems to either harmonize or rhyme with the colors of Reid’s red hair and beige suit.
