April (The Green Gown) was painted Childe Hassam towards the end of his life in 1920 and captures the contemporary vogue for Japonisme, the artistic style based on the art of Japan. This influence we see in the reclining woman’s oriental dress and the screen in the background which shows birds and plants. The overall atmosphere is one of luxuriant exoticism, tinged by the woman’s demeanor and expression of sadness.
Childe Hassam’s April (The Green Gown) is in the Gibbes Museum of Art in Charleston, South Carolina, United States.
