Portrait of Gregory XVI, Pope - Paul Delaroche

Portrait of Gregory XVI, Pope: Paul Delaroche

Portrait of Gregory XVI, Pope is an 1844 painting by French Romantic artist Paul Delaroche. This work is located in the Museum of the History of France.

Gregory XVI, born Bartolomeo Alberto Cappellari on September 18, 1765, in Belluno, Venetian Republic (now Italy), served as the 254th pope of the Roman Catholic Church from February 2, 1831, until his death on June 1, 1846. His pontificate was marked by conservatism, resistance to modernizing trends, and efforts to combat perceived threats to the authority and teachings of the Church.

This portrait was painted in 1844, two years before Pope Gregory XVI’s death in 1846.
