Completed by the French painter Gustave Courbet in 1869, this picture pre-dates the impressionists and is generally considered to be ‘post-Romantic’ is one of a series of paintings he produced of ocean Waves in Normandy, North Western France.
Gustave Courbet’s The Wave is currently in the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne, Australia after being acquired in 1923 from French Journalist and impressionist patron Theodore Duret.
