Times of the Day, Morning Analysis
Four Times of the Day, Morning is the first in a series of four 1757 landscape paintings by French artist Joseph Vernet, depicting different scenes at different times of the day.
This is a landscape in the classical style which was resurgent during the eighteenth century. It is a scene like those painted by Claude Lorrain a century earlier. Two fishermen and a young woman prepare for the day of work in a setting of peaceful dawn light by a mill in the foreground. There is calm before the heat and business of the day permeating this restrained work.
Joseph Vernet: Four Times of the Day, Morning, along with the other three works in this series, is held at the Art Gallery of South Australia in Adelaide.
