Times of the Day, Midday Analysis

Four Times of the Day, Midday is the second in a series of four 1757 landscape paintings by French artist Joseph Vernet, depicting different scenes at different times of the day. Here the calm of morning is shattered by the onset of a storm, a symbol of the bustle of the middle of the day.

A man and woman flee their work for shelter as fisherwomen draw in their nets to the right. The strong light and shade contrasts of the sky form a realistic portrayal of the fluctuation in the weather.

Joseph Vernet: Four Times of the Day, Midday, along with the other three works in this series, is held at the Art Gallery of South Australia in Adelaide.
