Analysis of Faure as Hamlet

Édouard Manet paints in 1877 his friend and art collector, the famous baritone Jean-Baptiste Faure as Hamlet in Verdi’s operatic role. The painting is done in a matter-of-fact manner by the artist. The dark costume is loosely painted and is insignificant in comparison with Manet’s treatment of the face which reveals both the anguish of the character and the majestic impersonation by the performer.

Édouard Manet’s Faure as Hamlet is in the Museum Folkwang in Essen, Germany.
