Here American artist Fitz Henry Lane paints Boston Harbour as a naval scene of several ships in a highly realistic style. This 1856 work shows a particular concern with the light effects of the sky and a certain glassiness of the gently rippling water that masks depth. Lane’s concern with light was such that he became associated with the school of American Luminism.
