The Adoration of the Shepherds: Georges de la Tour

Georges de la Tour: The Adoration of the Shepherds

Using his typical chiaroscuro or dramatic light to dark contrast, Georges de la Tour brings an intimacy to this 1644 picture titled The Adoration of the Shepherds that is heightened by our proximity to the group. Close as we are, and in agreement with the silence of the medium of painting itself, this seems to be a portrayal of silent prayer and reverence for the Christ child who is the attention of all eyes in the space.

Georges de la Tour’s The Adoration of the Shepherds is in the Louvre in Paris.
