Evert Collier: Still Life

Still Life: Evert Collier

Evert Collier was a Dutch painter of the Golden Age who specialised in trompe l’oeil still lifes where the eye is tricked into thinking that the objects in the picture are actual objects. Collier lived much of his life in England and this is shown here where we see a copy of the speech made by the king to parliament.

We also see a comb, a newspaper a quill and other objects. The picture can be seen as a vanitas, or a reference to the futility of power and empty vanity in the face of death. He painted this work in 1696.

Evert Collier’s Still Life in the Indianapolis Museum of Art in Indiana, USA.
