Analysis of Portrait of the Superintendent Trabuc in the Hospital Saint Paul

Portrait of the Superintendent Trabuc in the Hospital Saint Paul was painted by Vincent Van Gogh during his stay at Saint Paul from 1889-90 for mental illness, in September 1889 specifically. We see in the sparse surroundings of the sitter and his expression an atmosphere of a grave mood.

Yet in the painting of his jacket that ripples and seems almost plant-like, there is a lightening of mood as if the act of painting were therapeutic.

Vincent Van Gogh’s Portrait of the Superintendent Trabuc in the Hospital Saint Paul is in the Kunstmuseum in Solothurn in Switzerland.
