Analysis of Portrait of Lydia Cassatt

This picture by Cassatt of her already seriously ill sister Lydia is a reflection of mortality. The grave and fearful stare looking out beyond the picture space perhaps is contemplating the unknown. Lydia is wrapped up in a coat that shares the autumnal colors of the background but is even brighter as if the artist is seeking to portray in her dying sister the spirit she once had.

This work is located in the Petit Palais in Paris, France.
