On the Desert is an 1867 history painting by French Academic artist Jean-Léon Gérôme.
Analysis of On the Desert
Orientalist painter Jean-Léon Gérôme visited the East a number of times and On the Desert was likely inspired by his early trips in 1854 and 1867. We see a young Arab man with two hunting dogs looking out beyond what we can see as the desert wind carries sound to them.
The figures occupy a relatively small space in the picture, in consideration that they are in the foreground. The dunes and coming storm overhead loom large in their vastness.
Jean-Léon Gérôme: On the Desert is in the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore, Maryland in the United States.
