Mathias Blumenthal was a Norwegian painter working during the 18th century when he painted Nivisarsiaq. The title word ‘Nivisarsiaq’ is Greenlandic for ‘young girl’. The female figure stands facing us confidently and shows the marks of her tribe on her chin and hands.
She stands in the midst of her northern landscape and is framed by the rocky outcrops behind her.
Mathias Blumenthal’s Nivisarsiaq is in Halden, Bergen in Norway.
