J.M.W. Turner: Melrose Abbey

Melrose Abbey: J.M.W. Turner

English artist J.M.W. Turner here paints Melrose Abbey in a scene suffused with natural light and shows a Romantic fascination with the picturesque of ruins. Also, the single figure of a man stands in the background in front of the massive window. Painted in 1822, this picture too is Romantic in that it conforms to Romanticism’s concern with the individual communing with both nature and history.
