Louvre at Night: Aleksander Gierymski

The Louvre at Night is an 1892 Impressionist painting by Polish artist Aleksander Gierymski. It located is in the National Museum in Poznan, Western Poland.

Aleksander Gierymski habitually painted at night and Louvre at Night from 1892 shows his skill in the rendering of light and shades, as our eyes move out from the darkness of the foreground into the Parisian night of the street.

There are two light sources here, with the wall-hung lamp on the right whose light fades as we travel out into the paler moonlight. The graduation from one light source to the other, which highlights the architectural detail of the facade in the left background, shows great subtlety.
