Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec: Examination at the Faculty of Medicine

Examination at the Faculty of Medicine is an unusually somber canvas by the prolific Post-Impressionist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901).

It was painted in 1901 which was the last year of his life and, due to a long history of various medical complaints, he developed a knowledge of medicine. The examinee wears the sole light note in an otherwise dreary room, his red sash. Toulouse-Lautrec makes a realistic, matter-of-fact portrayal here along with a speed of execution.

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec’s Examination at the Faculty of Medicine is in the Musée Toulouse-Lautrec.
