William Holman Hunt: Christ and the Two Marys

Christ and the Two Marys: William Holman Hunt

Prominent Pre-Raphaelite artist William Holman Hunt began Christ and the Two Marys in the 1840s but it was not completed for five decades.

It shows the resurrected Christ appearing to his mother Mary and Mary Magdalene encircled in an aureole that brings to mind the circle of life, death, and renewed eternal life, or the completion and fulfillment of the prophecy of human salvation through Jesus’ sacrifice. All of this is accomplished by Hunt in vivid Pre-Raphaelite colors.

William Holman Hunt’s Christ and the Two Marys is in the Art Gallery of South Australia in Adelaide, South Australia
