Jacob Jordaens: The Judgement of Paris

The Judgement of Paris: Jacob Jordaens

Jacob Jordaens, one of the premier Flemish Baroque painters, treats a story from Greek mythology in The Judgement of Paris, painted around 1620-1625. In the beauty contest between three goddesses, Paris, a mortal man, offers the apple as the prize to Aphrodite, goddess of love, who has offered the most beautiful woman in the world, Helen, to him. The Baroque style is evidenced in the movement of the figures, the rich fleshly tones of the goddesses, and their varying and expressive gestures.

Jacob Jordaens’s The Judgement of Paris is in the Lowe Art Museum in Miami.
