This painting depicts Ambroise Vollard, one of the most influential French art dealers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He was the founder of the art gallery Rue Laffitte, which became the center of the Parisian contemporary art market. His appearance and mannerisms were often described in the following terms: “a large, brusque, rough man” with a “downcast look”.
